Orlistat works by preventing around 30% of the fat from consumed calories from being absorbed by the body. Instead, the undigested and excess fat is passed out with your faeces (stools). This will help you avoid gaining weight, but isn't a guarantee for you to losing weight.
Patients using Orlistat should engage in a balanced diet and exercise programme prior to beginning the treatment and you should continue this programme during treatment and after you stop taking orlistat.

Orlistat will usually only be recommended if you've made a significant effort to lose weight through diet, exercise or changing your lifestyle. Even then, orlistat is only prescribed if you have a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or over. Treatment with orlistat should be taken in conjunction with a balanced low-fat diet and an exercise regime.
When is Orlistat not recommended?
Orlistat isn't usually recommended for pregnant or breastfeeding women.

If you skip a meal, or the meal consists of very little fat, the orlistat capsule shouldn't be administered. You can refer to the patient information leaflet that comes with your medicine.
