Malarone Paediatric (Atovaquone Proguanil) is a fixed-dose anti-malarial with an active ingredient combination of atovaquone and proguanil hydrochloride, antimalarial agents, in tablet formulation. Malarone is a popular alternative to other anti-malaria brands due to it’s high level of protection and because treatment can started just 1-2 days before entering a malaria region and completed 7 days after leaving making it perfect for last minute and short stay trips. It is approved for use, even in areas where chloroquine resistance has been reported and has been recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) as an option for the prevention of P. falciparum malaria.

Dosage for Children:

Malarone Peadiatric tablets should be started 2 days before traveling and for 7 days upon returning. The usual dose to prevent malaria will depend on your child’s weight.

  • 11-20 kg - 1 tablet once a day
  • 21-30 kg - 2 tablets once a day (as a single dose)
  • 31-40 kg - 3 tablets once a day (as a single dose)

Warnings:
Please note this product is not suitable for children or for adults weighing less than 40 kg. Lariam (Mefloquine) may also not be suitable if any of the following apply:

  • If you are allergic to lariam or any of its ingredients (see below)
  • If you suffer from liver problems
  • If you are pregnant or breast feeding 
  • If you suffer from depression or other mental illnesses

 

Side Effects:

In some instances Malarone can have side effects. If you notice any of the following reactions whilst taking Malarone you should consult a doctor.

  • Dizziness
  • Sleeping problems (insomnia)
  • Depression
  • Loss of appetite
  • Fever
  • Rash which may be itchy
  • Cough

Severe Reactions are uncommon however if you notice any of the following reactions whilst taking Malarone you should stop your treatment and contact a doctor immediately:

  • Allergic reaction including rash and itching, tightness of the chest or throat, breathing difficulty, swelling of the face, eyes, lips or tongue.
  • Severe skin reactions including rash and severe blistering.

Some medicines can affect the effectiveness of Malarone. If you are currently taking any of the medicines listed below you should consult your doctor.

  • Metoclopramide, used to treat nausea and vomiting
  • Tetracycline, Rifampicin and Rifabutin (Antibiotics)
  • Efavirenz or certain highly active protease-inhibitors used to treat HIV
  • Warfarin and other medicines that stop blood clotting
  • Etoposide used to treat cancer.

 

Ingredients:

Active ingredients: Atovaquone, Proguanil hydrochloride

Other ingredients: Poloxamer 188, microcrystalline cellulose, hydroxypropyl cellulose, povidone K30, sodium starch glycollate (Type A), magnesium stearate, hypromellose, titanium dioxide (E171), iron oxide red (E172), macrogol 400 and polyethylene glycol 8000.
