Xenical (Orlistat)
Xenical

Xenical (Orlistat) works in your digestive system to block about one-third of the fat in the food you eat from being digested. Xenical attaches to the enzymes in your digestive system (lipases) and blocks them from breaking down some of the fat you have eaten during your meal. The undigested fat cannot be absorbed and is eliminated by your body.

What is Obesity?

Obesity is a term that refers to people who are very overweight and have a much higher degree of body fat. There are a number of ways a person’s weight can be assessed. The most widely used method is the body mass index. The body mass index (BMI) is your weight in kilograms divided by your height in metres squared. You can use our BMI calculator to work out your own BMI.

  • if your BMI is between 25 and 29, you would be considered overweight
  • if your BMI is between 30 and 40, you would be considered obese
  • if your BMI is over 40, you would be considered very obese (known as ‘morbidly obese’)

What are the health risks of obesity?

People who suffer from obesity are at risk from developing serious health conditions that can in extreme cases be life threatening. As well as the serious conditions listed below obesity has also been linked with mental health conditions such as depression.

  • Heart disease
  • Type 2 diabetes and
  • Bowel cancer.
  • Breast Cancer

As well as the serious health conditions listed above people who are obese also suffer from a range of other weight related health problems such as those listed below:

  • Shortness of breath
  • Painful joints (knee, ankle, hip)
  • Back pain
  • Bad skin
  • Increased sweating

What treatment options are available?

If you are obese and you want to lose weight then there are several options open to you. These options include lifestyle changes, diet and exercise, prescription medicines such as Orlistat, and in extreme cases surgery.

Lifestyle changes:

Making changes to your lifestyle is the simplest way of reducing your body weight. Make sure that your diet contains plenty of fruit and vegetables, as well as plenty of potatoes, bread, rice, pasta. As part of a well-balanced diet you should include meat, fish, eggs, beans and other non-dairy sources of protein. Be careful to avoid foods with high salt contents as this can cause high blood pressure in already obese people. A well balanced diet will help stop people gaining weight, however in order to lose weight you must also increase your daily exercise rate.

Play the video for and listen to real people talk about how they have successfully lost weight and an NHS dietitian offers useful tips.

Prescription medicines:

Currently Orlistat is the only approved medicine available on prescription in the UK for weight loss. Orlistat works by blocking the action of the proteins that are used to break down fats in your gut. By preventing this process around a third less fat is absorbed by the body. This excess fat is then passed out of the body in your stool. On its own it can help halt the weight gain process. However in order to benefit fully and lose weight you must also combine it with a low fat diet and an exercise regime.

Surgery:

In extreme cases surgery may be applicable however this is generally reserved for individuals who are either morbidly obese (BMI of 40 and over) or have a BMI of 35 or more but also have underlying health conditions which prevent them from trying other types of weight loss treaments and activities. People who do have weight loss surgery may have a gastric by-pass or have a gastric band fitted.
