Another effective over the counter remedy is Co-Codamol which is a mix of 500mg paracetamol and 8mg codeine. Codeine is much stronger and is an opioid painkiller which works by mimicking your body’s natural pain reducing chemicals which are called endorphins. Endorphins are found in the brain and spinal cord. They block the transmission of pain signals sent to the brain by your nerves. Co-Codamols mix of paracetamol and codeine can be very effective at reducing severe pain.

If over the counter Co-Codamol is not providing effective pain relief a stronger version of Co-Codamol is available. This is a mix of 500mg paracetamol and 30mg of codeine. Due to its strength this mix is only available on prescription.

A relatively new prescription pain killer on the market is Celebrex which is manufactured by Pfizer. Celebrex is a new medication for the treatment of inflammation and pain caused by the two most common forms of arthritis, Rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis. Celebrex is classified as a non steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID), however, it is unique in its biologic action compared to previously available drugs of this class because Celebrex is one of the first non steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) to selectively inhibit primarily the Cox-2 enzyme, while sparing the Cox-1 enzyme that is responsible for protecting the delicate lining of the stomach.

Celebrex can help if you suffer from any of the following:

• Osteoarthritis pain (a form of arthritis, occurring mainly in older persons, that is characterized by chronic degeneration of the cartilage of the joints) 
• Rheumatoid arthritis pain (chronic autoimmune disease with inflammation of the joints and marked deformities).

• Primary dysmenorrhea pain (moderate to severe menstrual pain). 

Celebrex is approved for the management of all of the above and will provide excellent 24 hour pain relief without the risk of stomach problems that are associated with other NSAIDs such as Aspirin, Indocin, Ibuprofen, Naprosyn and Feldene.
