Anyone engaging in unprotected sex is at risk of contracting an STD so if you have recently had sex without a condom we recommend that you should take an STD test. Not everyone with an STD will have signs and symptoms of the condition however common physical symptoms may include discharge, pain or ulcers. Chlamydia Treatment (Azithromycin)

Chlamydia is the most common STD in the UK, especially in the 16-24 age group. The infection is caused by the spread of bacteria (Chlamydia Trachomatis) during unprotected vaginal, anal or oral sex. In many cases (50% of men and 70-80% of women) there are no obvious symptoms, however in some cases symptoms will show between 1-3 weeks after unprotected sex. If left untreated the Chlamydia bacteria can spread and cause further long-term problems including infertility.

What are sexually transmitted diseases (STD's)?

Sexually transmitted infections (STD's) are infections spread from person to person through unprotected sexual activity including vaginal, anal, and oral sex. Although STD's can have distinctive symptoms, in many cases there are no visible symptoms which has led to many cases being undiagnosed. Up to 50% of men and 70% of women who are diagnosed with chlamydia gonorrhea show no visible symptoms of the infection.

What are the most common STD's?

There are three main types of STD, bacterial (chlamydia, gonorrhoea, Syphilis), viral (genital warts, genital herpes, HIV) and parasitic (pubic lice, scabies). In the UK the most commonly diagnosed STD's are chlamydia, gonorrhoea and genital warts although there has also been a rise in the number of cases of syphilis.

How are STD's treated?

Treatment for STD's varies depending on the infection type. Bacterial infections such as chlamydia, gonorrhoea can be treated with a single dose course of antibiotics. Viral infections such as herpes will require an anti-viral treatment to fight the outbreak. You can click on the treatments above to find out more about them.
